Having the Heart

Heart. It means a lot of things, in a variety of contexts, and all of them are essential to our health and well-being.

Physically of course, the heart is the organ located in the torso of our human body and is responsible for pumping oxygenated blood throughout our physical form. It is a powerful muscle that with some care and exercise (i.e.: aerobics & healthy diet), stays healthy and allows us to live and to flourish physically. Without it, well… we simply can not retain human form and we cease to exist on this plane.

Emotionally and spiritually, the heart is the essence of love, of compassion, of sacrifice. An open, loving heart is a manifestation of our higher nature, the key to the human evolution of spirit currently underway on this planet. It provides the opportunity to see beyond our self, beyond our egos, and allows us a clarity of mind unfettered by worry or selfish motivations.

Metaphysically, the heart chakra is the fourth of our seven chakras, and is one of balance and harmony. It ties together the other chakras, above and below, and seeks to balance them: instinct and grounding (first), sexual drive (second), and power (third), with communication (fifth), insight (sixth), and higher consciousness (seventh). When properly active, we feel balanced, connected, and secure both in the physical world as well as spiritually.

There are so many definitions and descriptions of “heart”! But it is such an essential part of our being on so many levels that without it, we are unbalanced, incapable of love and compassion, we are selfish, mean, unable to comprehend spiritual callings, and just …unhealthy. Without heart, true open heart, we are different than the most primitive animals of our world -constantly fighting out of instinct and survival- only in our capacity for ego. Without heart, we are nothing.

But with heart, we can overcome any apparent wrong. With heart, we see that there is so much more to our lives than our own wants and desires and selfishness. With heart, we see that we are all interconnected, and that we are all part of the whole. With heart, we love, we grow, we care for more than our immediate wants and supposed needs. With heart, we are capable of becoming so much more than simply another life-form stuck on this planet. With heart, we can join with our higher nature and be at peace, in love, living with compassion and sincerity and honor and respect.

Do you have the heart…?

“We arrive at truth, not by reason only, but also by the heart.”
