108

Posted on October 9, 2007 By

Wow… it has been several days of non-stop running! I’ve barely had time to sleep or meditate (nevermind blog!) but the physical demands its due, so to speak, and it’s all part of the overall cycle. So, that said, and apologies for lack of posting extended, this is a special post on this blog, for it is the 108th. It seemed only fitting to honor the number that through the ages has held a certain significance. Why the number one-hundred-and-eight? Well, to mention only a few references…

  • There are usually 108 beads in the Chinese Buddhist & Taoist mala as well as in the Hindu maalaa
  • In some traditions, the number one represents the individual, the zero represents God/Spirit/Nirvana, and eight represents infinity
  • There are 108 Vedic Upanishads
  • On the Sri Yantra, there are 54 intersections, each divided into male & female (shiva & shakti). 54×2=108
  • It has been said that a total of 108 “lines of energy” converge to form the heart chakra.
  • According to Indian astronomy, the diameter of the sun is (about) 108 times the diameter of the Earth
  • Still, per Indian astronomy, the distance between the Earth and the moon is (about) 108 times the moon’s diameter
  • Again in the Indian astronomical system, the distance between the Earth and the Sun is (about) 108 times the sun’s diameter

There are more references to the mystical nature of the number 108 throughout the ages, of course, if one cares to look. For now, however, this monkey needs to find a tree…

Happy 108th post!
Namaste.

I’m amazed at all these pertinent facts and ideas in this post. You’ve taught me a lot! Its uplifting to remind ourselves of connections that exist all around us that bring together numbers and events of import. I had to laugh, because the last time I encountered someone listing events similar to this was a commemorative funeral honoring a 101+1/2 yr old friend. It was incredible to reflect back on all the local and wold events that unfolded during her lifetime. Its comforting to connect with her spirit as well.

  2. Hello Liara,

You make a very good point that through common symbols or meaning we are reminded of our connections to each other and to our World. That connection always exists, but a little reminder is often a good thing. Those reminders often sneak up in the least-suspected spaces! They provide a map of a kind, that helps show us the path forward and back… providing a certain meaning and sense of accomplishment to our pathway.

    Welcome to One Mystical Monkey!
    Namaste.
