Imaginings… money
“Money makes the world go round”
Unfortunately, there’s some truth to this. Without going into a political rant, wars have been (& are being) fought over what amounts to money, people are raised to political and corporate office based largely on the amount of money they have and can raise. Local, National and International policy gets decided upon and put into place based on fiscal influence. Quality of life is determined (to a large degree) upon fiscal prowess and cultural/self esteem is determined by… yep, money, and the things that money can buy. Success of films, musicals, theater, and art are based on the money they bring in at the box office – not on their moral merit, not on the message of the piece, not on any other aesthetic or ethical qualities they may have. Money. Money. MONEY.
I’m sick of money. Except in its capacity to generate large amounts of stress in a large number of people all over the Globe, it’s essentially useless. Yes, yes… many people would argue with me saying wars would be fought over bartering issues instead of over money, or remind me of how things were a hundred or so years ago when we didn’t have such an established, trusted system of exchange. Some may even try convincing me how civilized our world has become since money – established, guaranteed, agreed-upon, stress-generating – money, came into the picture. Yeah. Sure. But what if…
What if… a world where morals, ethics, philosophy, art, and spiritual insight have a higher priority and value than some piece of paper you stick in your pocket and which everyone wants for their own, were possible? A world where we are free to pursue that which makes our hearts soar, without concern for food or medicine or housing; a world where we work as a community toward common goals, without ego, miscommunications and ulterior motivations. A world where we all benefit from what each of us individual expressions of Spirit can bring to it – whether it be building houses or applying healing or growing herbs and produce. How wonderful to be able to live with Compassion in the forefront of our thoughts and actions instead of the misguided, selfish, need to protect ourselves, those about whom we care, and the things which we have managed to possess with the assistance of money.
Is the civilization I describe really that Utopian and unrealistic in nature? Perhaps. But it made you think, didn’t it? It made you wonder, dream, and perhaps even recall a time when things worked much more like that, didn’t it? Did it relieve some of your stress? I, for one, can not but help wonder how much happier we would all be if we based our success in life on how much we can help our fellow inhabitants and on how much good we can do for each other, instead of on how much money we have in the bank and how many new cars we have in the garage…
Imagine. Dream. Manifest.
And remember: Sometimes, the quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket.
Namaste.
