Sunset on the Cay

A couple unexpected days, removed from the usual surroundings, the normal responsibilities, the routine pace of living. An opportunity to unwind, to relax, to go at one’s own pace, without schedule or responsibility or distraction from… being. A leisurely walk along the shore reveals a hot day with a gentle breeze. A trio of local artists sketch and paint watercolors at the edge of the road, overlooking a dock and a barely-standing shack, elevated high above the water on stilts. Listen to the soft lapping of the water against the beach and watch as tiny crabs scurry away from the vibrations of your unhurried steps in the sand…

To remove ourselves physically from our usual surroundings and take a break from the normal routines gives us an important opportunity to just BE in ways daily life and scheduled vacations don’t often allow. It is an opportunity to reacquaint ourselves with our soul and the natural state of peace found there; an opportunity to simply exist in ways we often forget as we grow from the pure simple innocence of childhood to adulthood, complete with artificial responsibilities and stress. It’s an opportunity to exist without the regular, sometimes subtle, confrontations with the external, ego-oriented restraints we put ourselves under in order to live with some level of “success” in this physical world.

But what does living successfully in this world mean? Does it mean racing around from job to home to store to whatever else is on our “to do” list? Does it mean having the car and the house and the 2 kids and the dog and whatever else indicates “life”? Or is it coming to terms with our innermost being, the part of our self that is natural, pure, innocent, beautiful – without the pressure of maintaining the external responsibilities of our daily lives. Or is it both?

When last have we witnessed a sunset for the pure joy of watching a sunset, without agenda or time limitations or being overwhelmed by the physical?

Take the time. Be.
Namaste.
